Rubin http://blog.ironmountain.com/?p=1295 ]]> July 13th will mark the one-year anniversary of the enactment of the Rules for Meaningful Use. The rules, drafted by the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare, define the minimum requirements that providers must meet through their use of certified EHR technology in order to qualify for Medicare and Medicaid incentive payments. At stake: A share of the $19 billion set aside in subsidies and stimulus funds for demonstrating “meaningful use.”

Unfortunately, Meaningful Use didn’t provide any recommendations (or incentives) for how best to organize and scan records into an EMR system; as a result, hospitals are going about it in a variety of ways – some efficient, some not.

With the clock ticking on this deadline and the potential for a share of billions, we wanted to see just how this process was going. Our own experience from consulting with hospitals tells us that this process has been disjointed, so we asked 200 health information professionals involved in their hospitals records scanning process for EMR how they were doing. The results, posted below, confirmed what we had seen amongst our customers.
